NEOLITHIC FLINT MINES IN SPIENNES

Spiennes is the centre of prehistoric civilization in Europe. Research has shown that humans were present here from the Palaeolithic. During the Neolithic, between 4200 and 2500 BC, numerous flint mines were dug out. Some of them were updated by archaeologists and can be visited.

Comment:

Recognized "World Heritage of Humanity" by Unesco.

Visits without appointment: from March to November, every first Sunday of the month from 10 am to 4 pm.
Exceptionally open: the second Sunday of September for the Heritage Days.

Groups (minimum 12 persons): visits all year round by appointment via mail or phone: +32 (0)65/35 34 (outside Belgium: +32 (0)65 35 34 78).

Access: Road Mons-Beaumont, crossroads of Spiennes, then signposted.
