WITCHES, GIANTS AND... BREWERIES
AUBECHIES, a small green village near Beloeil, is characteristic of the Hainaut architecture of the past century. Listed buildings and characteristic farms enrich the architectural heritage of this village . The area's economy has always been based on agriculture.
The village of ELLEZELLES is part of the 'Parc naturel du Pays des Collines" whose territory covers 25000 hectares. The hundred or so hills which emphasize the landscape offer visitors superb panoramas. Maybe you will even see protected species (deer, foxes, weasels,..) and find rare plants. Other characteristics of the region include the talent of its producers and craftsmen and its folklore whose stories abound with witches, devils and legends.

Worth a visit: the Roman church of Saint-Géry (11th-12th century), the abbey farm of Saint-Ghislain (18th century), the façade of the old 'Maison communale' (Town hall), the old De Bruycker castle, the Stiévenart and Bruyère farms, the Domus Romana.

BREWERY OF SILLY (SILLY)Silly, a village - situated in the Ath, Enghien, Soignies triangle - owes its name to the Sylle River which runs through it. It still has a brewery which was founded in 1820 and used to be called "Cense de la Tour". This brewery is today run by its fifth generation. From 1947 onwards, the brewery became more important than the farm but was still only producing highly fermented beers (Grisette, Saison Silly, Scotch). It was much later, around 1950, that the Silly Pils, of low fermentation, was added to the production, followed by the Double Enghien, the Blanche Titje and the Divine. Nowadays also with a fruit beer, the Pink Killer with pink grapefruit, as well as the rum beer Crè Tonnerre and our beer of the Abbey of Forest.

HOSPITAL OUR LADY WITH THE ROSE (LESSINES)The Hospital Our Lady with the Rose was founded in 1242 and is one of the last examples of a self-sufficient hospital, complete with farm, gardens, ice chamber and cemetery, next to the convent buildings and hospital. It is an example of how hospitals worked during the Middle ages. This religious hospital is remarkable because the whole complex is well preserved but also because of the diversity of the structures and the rich art, pharmaceutical or medical collections, presented in a unique environment. The hospital Our Lady with the Rose, a jewel in the historical heritage of Lessines, was forgotten until the end of the eighties. More than 10 years of courage and hard work by volunteers were needed to save this masterpiece from disappearing and to turn it into a museum. |
